The Future of Telehealth

July 08, 2015
Predicting the Future. That’s a real challenge, to be sure. Technology and health care change often, sometimes rapidly and occasionally in unexpected directions. Well, I dug in and started doing some research trying to become a healthcare clairvoyant. As I did the research, I found that there was more than one potential path telehealth could take. While I think the discipline will grow and be used more and more as time goes on, It wasn’t absolutely certain where telehealth is headed, especially in light of the fact that while the research and paper preparation were underway, we were waiting for the Supreme Court to hand down a decision on the exchanges and supplementary funding.

Well, today’s coffee will just be a demitasse. I just got back from a whirlwind trip to Bismarck, North Dakota. I was invited to speak to a select legislative committee on healthcare about telehealth.

Telehealth is Heating Up

June 24, 2015
Well, summer is finally here. It’s my least favorite season. It’s hot and uncomfortable. Here in Billings the sun rises about 4:30 a.m. and it stays light until 10 p.m. or so. And now it’s starting to get hot.

But the weather isn’t the only thing that’s heating up. Telehealth is, too. There are a lot of exciting things going on and this is a good time to mention a few.

Does Primary Care Have a Place in Telehealth?

June 03, 2015
Does Primary care have a place in telehealth, and if so, how can they establish that place? That’s a question we discussed recently at the Montana Primary Care Association’s Spring Symposium. I was fortunate to be invited to the meeting and asked to present on how telehealth can help Community Health Centers (CHC) expand the care they provide their patients. A few of the centers are using telehealth already, primarily in mental health care, but there’s much more that can be added to the menu.

What a busy month!

May 27, 2015
This has been a big month for meetings. In the last four weeks, besides the Montana Primary Care Association meeting I wrote about earlier, I’ve attended the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health’s National Rural EMS Conference in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This is another new association for us and we’re excited to make this connection. Rural Health is a critical component of telehealth and we want to be sure we are as well-connected into that area as possible. I represented the national Coalition of Telehealth Resource Centers in the exhibit hall.

Are you providing Tele-Dentistry?

May 20, 2015
A new search is underway. At least, it’s a new search for me. I’m looking for information about another great potential use of telehealth: tele-dentistry. I’ve spoken with dentists, Community Health Center (CHC) employees, telehealth network operators and telehealth coordinators and they all think that would be a wonderful use of telehealth. I agree.

How Telehealth Fits In

March 11, 2015
Lots of interesting work going on this month. I’m going to be presenting at the Montana Primary Care Association’s annual conference in April and have been starting the process of putting my presentation together. My first question was what can telehealth do for a Community Health Center?
