NRTRCs Busy Travel Schedule

February 11, 2015
It must be Spring. The biggest signal for the season change is the uptick in travel the NRTRC staff faces at this time of year. It seems like nobody wants to plan travel in the Winter when things are potentially dangerous, in the Summer during vacation time or in the Fall as the Holidays approach, so Spring seems to start and end at the airport.

Telehealth and Occupational Therapy

January 28, 2015
I've received several queries lately about using teleheatlh for Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech Therapy and Physical Therapy (PT). It's a natural. Unfortunately, it's hard for providers to get paid for offering those services via telehealth. Most states follow the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) pay schedule for telehealth and those therapies aren't covered, even if they have parity laws.

Significant Rule Change in Texas

January 21, 2015
The Texas Board of Medicine has just made a rather significant rule change. They've said that before telehealth can be used for patient care, the patient must be seen in person by the provider or referred to the telehealth provider by a primary care provider.

What's in Telehealth's Past?

January 14, 2015
Last week I talked about the deceptively simple assignment the Board had given me: figure out the future of telehealth. Of course, it isn't so simple. Prognostication isn't my strong suit. One of the things I've always heard is that to guess the future, one needs to look at the past. Makes sense, I suppose. Looking at the past lets one see the trajectory we're on and guess where that trajectory will take us.

Exploring the Future of Telehealth

January 07, 2015
I'm putting together a white paper exploring the future of telehealth. It's an interesting proposition, because as far as I can determine from preliminary research, nobody knows where the discipline is heading. I guess that shouldn't be surprising, because when I look back at the trends and attitudes when I first became associated with telehealth, nobody would have been able to predict the scene we see today.

A look back on 2014

December 31, 2014
New Year's it a time of reflection for most of us and NRTRC is no different. We take stock, think about successes and lessons learned and make plans for the future. Here's a small look back: In 2014 we handled 178 technical assistance requests from 17 states, the District of Columbia and one Canadian Province. While most of the T/A requests were from our seven-state region, there were a few from other TRCs or organizations our colleagues referred to us. NRTRC won't refuse to help someone from outside the area, but we do tend to encourage 'outsiders' to see their regional TRC. Our Board members and staff have presented to groups, too, with 810 folks hearing about telehealth and NRTRC in various venues.

Guest Blog by Cathy Britain

December 17, 2014
Last month a workgroup facilitated by the Telehealth Alliance of Oregon (TAO) reached an agreement on the language to be included in a bill that will expand private payer reimbursement for telemedicine to include payment for services delivered directly to a patient anywhere that patient is including homes, schools and workplaces. The legislative concept currently known as LC 918 began to make its way through the legislative process with a hearing December 8 to request status as a committee bill.

Monthly OpenMic Webinars

December 10, 2014
One of the challenges of operating a multi-state organization aimed at serving ‘everyone’ is that it’s always a challenge to be sure we dot each "i" and cross every "t." NRTRC offers a monthly educational webinar that has shared some pretty interesting information from both nationally-known experts and from local providers who have expertise that is special to our region.
