When we think of Telehealth...

December 03, 2014
Often when we think of telehealth we think of specialty care delivered to underserved areas. Having the specialist in the 'big city' connect via video with patients for examinations, follow-up, etc., is a great way to save time, money and to expand care to those who don't have a specialty provider locally (in the Northwest that means most people: we have two frontier states, with populations under six per square mile, and the other five have a high percentage of frontier and rural counties.

Counting Blessings

November 26, 2014
Today's Coffee with Bob is more of a demitasse, I guess. Since tomorrow is Thanksgiving and we're in the mode of counting blessings and extending our gratitude,

Video Telehealth Toolkit

November 18, 2014
I do a lot of photography and feel fairly confident with that. But somebody volunteered me to start doing videos for NRTRC (it may have been me). We launched a pretty simple project a while back and I started on a steep learning curve. More recently, I've been working on a project with our colleagues at the Upper Midwest Telehealth Resource Center , so I'm getting back in video mode.

Virtual Care Clinics

November 12, 2014
Man, it's cold in Montana. -4° when I came to work today and warming all the way up to 9° as I write this. That'll likely be the high for the day. But today's weather is not only a reminder that my favorite season is on its way, but also a reminder of the value of telehealth. Why should someone who is already sick be forced to go out on a brutally cold day like to day and probably exacerbate their illness, when they could connect virtually with a provider and be 'seen' in the warmth of their own home?

Telehealth Resource Center

November 03, 2014
It's been a busy couple of weeks. I took some vacation time and traveled through the deserts of Northern Arizona and Southern Utah. I'd tell you the highlights, but every day was a great day, so there aren't any that stand out. After returning from the desert, I had about twelve hours to wash the sand out of my clothes and jump on another plane, this time to Virginia to meet with the other thirteen Telehealth Resource Centers for our semi-annual planning meeting.

Great Minds meet to Discuss the Future of Telehealth

October 24, 2014
I’m meeting with my counterparts from across the country. We’re discussing the future of telehealth and of the Telehealth Resource Centers (TRCs) and what kinds of services we can provide to our members as time goes on. I always like these meetings because it’s an opportunity to share ideas, get questions answered and talk with our sponsors from the Office for Advancement of Telehealth in Washington, DC.

The Office of Veterans Affairs is Serious about Telehealth

October 22, 2014
A recent press release from the Office of Veterans Affairs shows just how serious the VA is about telehealth. The release stated that in fiscal year 2014, the VA saw 690,000 patients via telehealth. That’s pretty significant. But more importantly for NRTRC’s region, the number of rural vets who were seen by telehealth was 44% of that total. (The Northwest probably has more rural veterans than any other seven-state region and could undoubtedly push that percentage much higher.)

Keep the Ball Rolling

October 15, 2014
I just got back from a meeting in Casper, Wyoming. It was with a group of people interested in telehealth, some already participating, some starting the adventure. It was a great meeting with several USDA representatives explaining how they could help with various projects and programs and a number of speakers already doing telehealth discussing new programs and projects.

Telehealth's Future

October 08, 2014
On Monday I wrote about NRTRC's new project, trying to foresee telehealth's future. That's an interesting challenge because the future keeps changing and looking different. Part of what I'll be trying to do is bring in as many expert opinions as I can and sift through them for commonalities and grains of clairvoyant astuteness. But in order to ask decent questions I've got to have at least some basis in knowledge, and that's where you can help me get off to a good start. What do you feel is telehealth's future?

Collaborative Projects

September 24, 2014
NRTRC has entered into a collaborative project with our friends at the Upper Midwest Telehealth Resource Center to put together a toolkit on tele-mental health. Jonathan Neufeld has come out to spend the day in the studio recording a little over a dozen video snippets on a wide range of points regarding tele-mental health from a practitioner's viewpoint.
